Jorge Calderon Gamboa

Senior Coordinating Attorney, Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) in Costa Rica

He has worked at the IACtHR since 2007, and is a Visiting Professor of the Human Rights Master’s program at the UN-Mandated University for Peace. In Mexico, Jorge was active in various NGOs and worked on several community projects with indigenous people. He also worked as a Deputy Visitor at the Human Rights Commission of Mexico City (Ombudsman). In 2014, Jorge was appointed by the Mexican government as an Independent Expert and commentator on the “International Protocol on the Documentation and Investigation of Sexual Violence in Conflict,” in London, England. In 2016, he worked as a Visiting Lawyer (Seconded Jurist) at the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France. He has been a Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Costa Rica (UCR), the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights (IIDH), the University of Lucerne (Switzerland), Santa Clara University (USA), as well as different Master’s programs in the Americas. He has also lectured in various countries in Europe, Africa, and the Americas. He is author of several articles on international human rights, in particular, on indigenous peoples’ rights, environmental law, and reparations.
